East of Cape Town, one goes over the mountain (‘Over de berg’) and out of the blue you are an area blessed with amazing fynbos (our indigenous vegetation), beaches, birds, sharks and of course whales.

I T I N E R A R Y
Day 1:
Highlights: BOTANICAL SPLENDOUR, WHALE WATCHING (seasonal June - Nov)
· Along the beautiful False Bay Coast line we stop at the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens. Pollination, seed dispersal and germination - there is always something happening and a story to be told.
· Visit Stony Point African Penguin Colony
Lunch Hermanus (own account)
· Drive up the contour path at Hermanus for a panoramic view of this beautiful area. Depending on the time of year this bay, known as one of the best land-based whale watching spots in the world, may be teeming with Southern Right whales.
· Visit Fernkloof Nature Reserve - This predominantly fynbos reserve is conveniently situated almost in the centre of Hermanus and gives very easy access to a number of the region’s special species.

Day 2:
Highlights: MEDICINAL PLANT HIKE, FYNBOS EXPORTING FARM
· We join a well-known local author on a medicinal plant hike in the indigenous vegetation on this farm.
· After a light lunch (included) under an umbrella of milkwood trees we have a tour of the Fynbos exporting farm – see how our beautiful indigenous vegetation is planted and processed for export.
Afternoon: Optional extra - organised whale watching/shark diving boat excursion

Day 3:
Highlights: HELDERBERG NATURE RESERVE, WINELANDS
After Breakfast:
· Scenic drive over Sir Lowry’s Pass. Guided walk in the peaceful and biodiverse Helderberg Nature Reserve. Fine walking trails, magnificent scenery, a rich bird life and a wealth of ericas, pelargoniums, proteas and bulbous plants are the draw cards of this 363-ha sanctuary.
The tour is a sensory experience, tasting, touching and smelling various plants are encouraged. Medicinal and traditional uses of plants in Southern Africa will also be discussed.
Lunch (own account)
· A visit to some of the wine farms in the Winelands area, including a cellar tour, wine tasting and the opportunity buy wine. One such a wine estate is Vergelegen – with its’ incredible octagonal garden and camphor trees planted by Van der Stel in 1700 and declared national monuments in 1942. This winery is unlike any formerly designed in South Africa.
Situated high up on a hill, the octagonal structure commands far-reaching views of the property, the town of Somerset West, and the breathtaking region of False Bay.
Only a single level is visible above ground. Three working levels lie buried in a tower construction, which allows for gravity flow and gentle handling of the wine.
